Slovakia joined the European Union in 2004 and since then it has become more and more popular with international tourists. There are many beautiful cities to visit, but the best known, and the largest, is Bratislava with a population of around half a million. Not as well-known as other central European cities like Budapest, Prague and Vienna, however, Bratislava remains relatively unspoilt. It lies on the river Danube with neighbours Hungary to the south and Austria to the west.  There is something for everyone here. You have to visit the old town and the castle and you can spend hours walking through old streets looking at the wonderful architecture of the old buildings. There is an eleventh-century cathedral as well as many palaces, museums and art galleries.  If you enjoy films, you should come to the international film festival which takes place every year in November and December. In fact, there are many other film festivals during the year as well. For shoppers, there are a lot of small shops and boutiques where you can easily spend many hours. And you shouldn’t miss the Christmas markets in December where you can buy traditional decorations and try traditional Slovak food and drink. There’s always a great atmosphere and it is certainly a pleasant way to meet the local people. For people who are more interested in activity holidays, the nearby mountains offer great sporting opportunities. In the summer, you can go hiking or cycling along the excellent walking trails or if you are brave, you can go swimming in the icy mountain lakes. In the winter, the conditions are usually excellent for skiing.  If you prefer to watch sport, then you can watch a noisy hockey game.  Bratislava offers all kinds of accommodation from cheap hostels to luxury hotels. The nightlife is exciting with clubs, bars and restaurants. So why wait? Come and see the beauty for yourself and we’re sure you’ll want to come back again and again.
